March Birthstone... Aquamarine

Happy March and Happy Birthday to all you born in this third month of the year. You all share one of the most beautiful gemstones, the Aquamarine. Its name is derived from Latin, which means "seawater" and its history and lore is rich.

The Romans were the first to use this beautiful gemstone in much of their jewelry and it was considered the ideal wedding gift for brides since the stone represented young love. Another legend says that Neptune, the King of the Sea, gave aquamarine as gifts to the mermaids, and from then on, it has brought love to all who have owned it. It was also given as a talisman for soldiers to render them invincible in times of battle.

In the Middle Ages, aquamarines were believed to help with fortune telling and as a result many crystal balls were created from this gemstone.

Today, aquamarines are admired for the variety of the color.  They are found from various exotic countries in a range of blue shades, from the palest pastel to greenish-blue to a deep blue.
