Sparkly History of Disco Jewelry

Who doesn't love the Disco era? I sure do! All of its groovy vibes and funky fashion have been major sources of inspiration for my designs. I even recently used a retro font to create some truly dazzling 18k Gold Initials Charms. 

Disco jewelry was incredibly popular during the 1970s, a.k.a The Disco Era. It’s easy to recognize with its bold, flashy designs and super bright colors which were all about making a statement. Designers leaned heavily on anything that could be thought of as striking materials (think rhinestones, crystals, large metals).

If you ever google disco, you will be brought into a world where the cultural movement that emerged centered around disco music and dance clubs and people expressing themselves for who they are always meant to be. The fashion was characterized by bright, flashy, and glamorous clothing and accessories, and disco jewelry was an essential part of this style.

Disco jewelry was often worn with that easily recognizable disco clothing, such as jumpsuits, bell-bottom pants, and platform shoes. It was often paired with other disco-era accessories such as sequined handbags, oversized sunglasses, and large, bold hairstyles.

As fashion trends do, we saw the popularity of disco jewelry decline in the 1980s with the end of the disco era, but it has seen a resurgence in recent years as a nostalgic fashion trend. Today, disco jewelry is often worn as a statement piece or a way to add glamour and sparkle to an outfit.

As a child of the 70s, it made such an impression on me. Seeing these over-the-top looks that were so bold and glamorous and the music and movies of the time would bring such much joy. So yes, I’m looking at you, BeeGees. Who didn’t love John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever and the lovely Olivia Newton John in Xanadu?
